  • Oval Shaker Box: A Steam Bending Tradition

A Shaker box is an oval shaped, bent wood container with a lid. It uses no glue and is held together with copper tacks. The tightly fitting lid makes them ideal for storing anything from seeds to hats. There were as many as 20 standard sizes when the Shakers were producing them for the masses. They are fun to make and it's a very approachable way to get into bending wood. In this class we will be making a nesting set of three boxes. Day one we will be preparing and bending our box and top bands. Day two after the bands are dry we will cut and fit the tops and bottoms, secure them with pegs. Time permitting, we will sand and oil the finished boxes. Jason Holtz has been designing and building custom furniture for over 25 years. He apprenticed under renowned chairmaker Jeff Miller in Chicago. Soon after he opened his own shop and started building a clientele in Chicago. Life changes and a new baby brought him back to Minnesota where he has been working happily in a co-op shop with other furniture makers for the last 20 years. He has taught Shaker Boxes to dozens of people, most of them on a picnic table in the woods with no power tools.
