China: Critical Minerals, Military Expansion, and Global Supply Chain

Instructor: Prof. Duncan J. McCampbell

China’s growing global influence is reshaping the 21st century — but how, exactly, is this happening? Join Prof. Duncan J. McCampbell, American lawyer, international business expert, and longtime China scholar, for a deep dive into three key forces driving China’s role on the global scene: control over critical minerals, rapid military expansion, and shifting patterns in international trade and tariffs.

Drawing on his extensive professional and academic experience — including leading business ventures in Beijing and teaching at major Chinese universities — Prof. McCampbell offers rare insider insight into China’s strategies and ambitions. You’ll come away with a clearer understanding of the risks, opportunities, and global impacts of China’s rise. This is a must-attend course for anyone interested in international affairs, global markets, or the future of U.S.-China relations.

Critical Minerals: September 15 - Military Expansion: October 6  -  Global Supply Chain: November 17

Prof. Duncan J. McCampbell is an American lawyer and Associate Professor of international business and law at Metropolitan State University in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.

In 1991 he graduated from law school and began private law practice with the Minneapolis firm of Lind, Jensen, Sullivan and Peterson, specializing in appeals and environmental law.

Leaving law practice for legal publishing in 1995, he joined West Publishing, the world’s largest legal publisher, spending 14 years—much of it abroad--with the Westlaw division of Thomson (now Thomson Reuters). His work involved building and launching new legal information businesses in the UK, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Canada, Hong Kong, and Australia.

In 2007-08 he was posted to Beijing to head up the Westlaw China project. He made an anchoring local acquisition, built and managed a local team and launched Westlaw China, Thomson’s first-ever character-based online information product. His work in Beijing cemented an enduring network of personal and professional relationships with senior representatives of China’s central government, its legal community, and its leading law schools.

For the last ten years Prof. McCampbell has taught and conducted research at several Chinese universities. He holds visiting professor appointments at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, at South China University of Technology in Guangzhou, and at Huaihua University and Hunan Institute of Science and Technology in the central PRC province of Hunan. His most recent extended visit to China occurred in May of this year.

Prof. McCampbell heads up the international business curriculum at his university. He is in his seventh year as a China discussion leader in the Foreign Policy Association’s Great Decisions Program.
