This class will be helpful to adults whether they have children, or spend time with children (eg: family members, schools or childcare). Talking about death can feel overwhelming or scary, but it doesn’t have to be. Whether it is an anticipated death or an unexpected death of a pet or human loved one, we will discuss how to start a conversation with children, and ways to add information based on an individual child’s age and development. We will discuss recommended words and language, and things to consider when having these conversations. We will discuss children's comprehension of death and typical behaviors children may exhibit. We will share recommended resources and give opportunities to ask questions. We want everyone to feel ready when the event occurs.

This class will be taught by Shannon Meland and Sam Schackman of Empowered Kids, LLC. They are masters educated, certified child life specialists who have backgrounds in child development and 15 years of extensive experience in guiding families through challenging life situations. Death can feel like an overwhelming topic, even for grownups. We want the adults to feel comfortable with the topic of death for when it inevitably comes up.
