    This Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention" presentation sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is AFSP’s flagship suicide prevention education program that covers the scope of this leading cause of death, what the research has found to be the warning signs and risk factors of suicide, and the strategies that prevent it. Established in 1987, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is a voluntary health organization that gives those affected by suicide a nationwide community empowered by research, education and advocacy to take action against this leading cause of death. AFSP is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide, including those who have experienced aloss. The practice is considered one of the pillars of Chinese medicine, drawing foundational principles from Daoism and Buddhism. In this 8-week course, students will learn qigong forms to support dynamic wellbeing - calming the mind while strengthening and stabilizing the body. Join us for an engaging look back at the major foreign policy events that shaped the world. We’ll explore key moments, examine underlying trends, and discuss what they might mean for the future with Tom Hanson. Thomas Hanson is a former U.S. Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State whose diplomatic postings included East Germany, France, Norway, the Soviet Union, Sweden, and the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. He also participated in the opening of new U.S. embassies in Mongolia and Estonia, worked on the Foreign Relations Committees of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, and served as Director for NATO and European Affairs at the Atlantic Council of the United States in Washington, D.C. Thomas Hanson is the Diplomat in Residence at the Alworth Institute for International Affairs at the University of Minnesota – Duluth and has taught diplomacy at Carleton College. He serves as Chair of the Minnesota Committee on Foreign Relations, Co-Chair of the Minnesota China Business Council, and is involved with several other organizations, including the U.S. Foreign Policy Working Group of the British International Studies Association. Hanson frequently speaks on international issues, contributes to media, and delivers an annual U.S. Foreign Policy Update.     Join us for this vibrant and inclusive art experience tailored to every skill level! In this engaging series, each participant will create up to 2-3 unique artworks using an array of mixed media of their choice-from bold acrylics and paint markers to expressive pastels and color pencils. With a cozy and person-centered class size limited to 6, you'll receive lots of one-to-one support and the freedom to choose your inspiration: whether it's your beloved pet, a mouth-watering dessert, or a favorite vacation spot-special requests are warmly welcomed. Have fun, grow your confidence and creativity, all while learning more about you! Each student or their guardian is required to have a conversation with Candice Simpson, the instructor, prior to the class start date. This will allow her to learn about the students' individual needs/circumstance. She will reach out to each student prior to the start date. Please note that the guardian will remain on site in the welcome area of the Edina Community Center building. There is a couch area with high counter workspaces for you to use. The welcome area is right next to the classroom in the event that a student needs assistance. Students attend class on their own, thereby fostering their independence and unique sense of creativity.     This class is for students who want to refresh previously learned ballet vocabulary, already have some experience and are comfortable moving beyond an intro level, alongside other adults and teens. You will have completed a Ballet 1 class. Ballet classes are a great way to gain strength and flexibility, improve posture and balance, and reduce stress in a noncompetitive atmosphere. Midwest School of Ballet’s experienced instructors provide a traditional ballet format of barre and center work while emphasizing proper alignment, technique, musicality, and artistry.   • Ballet Choreography/Performance

    Learn ballet choreography created just for you! The beauty of ballet is most often seen through choreography and performance. This class allows you to be part of that beauty and fun! You will: Learn a newly choreographed group piece, specifically choreographed for those who have signed up for the class (meaning it will be based on steps you know, for the most part). Rehearse the piece and work to make it better once it is learned. Build strength and work on artistry Perform for your friends or family at the end of the class. (optional) The performance will be in the classroom only and will be optional. Those who chose not to perform will be given “understudy" roles, so you can learn and rehearse but not perform. It is recommended that you have at least a year of dance class experience (current or past) before signing up for this class. You are also required to take the Ballet 1 class that is before this class as a warm up. You must sign up and pay for that class separately. Those who miss the ballet class that day may come to rehearsal and take notes but not dance, as dancing cold is unsafe in ballet. Those who are sick or out of town may sign in online via Zoom to watch rehearsal and take notes if they choose and if they give the instructor sufficient notice.   • Beginning Clawhammer Banjo - Intergenerational

    Mommas and Poppas, Grandpas and grandmas, and musically inclined young'uns 14 and up are welcome to come learn the hottest banjo style! This beginner banjo class is a five string banjo in the traditional clawhammer style. You will learn the basic downstroke “bum-ditty” pattern and how to enhance the music with hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides. You will learn simple old time tunes as well as practice licks. Julie will show you the basic chord structures, ways to practice switching chords and various resources for continued learning. You'll be playing songs around the campfire or in your living room for your family in no time. Taught in a fun and accessible manner, this course is designed for people with little or no banjo experience. Please bring a banjo (preferably open-back), a tuner and capo.     Beginning Sewing

    Beginning Sewing with Kim Poncius: In this beginner-friendly sewing class, you’ll learn basic skills while making fun, practical projects like a bookmark, hot/cold pack, and pin cushion. Along the way, gain confidence as you thread a sewing machine and explore a variety of simple stitches. All supplies included in the fee. If you have your own sewing machine please bring it with you. Once you take this beginner class you will be able to attend some of our other sewing options including: Upcycle: Make Your Own Jeans Apron, and Open Sewing. All participants should feel free to bring a water bottle and a snack since this class is in the evening.   • Beginning Woodcarver: Gnome - Intergenerational

    Class will begin with learning about various knives, how to utilize them, and the types of wood used in carving. Participants will carve a Gnome from a block of wood utilizing various types of cuts. After completing the carving, students will be able to paint their project. Knives and safety gloves will be available for each student to use at no charge; however, participants are encouraged bring their own, should they have them. Materials (wood blanks, paint, brushes, and wax) will be provided.     Learn the Bob Ross-style of landscape oil painting using the wet-on-wet technique in this 3-hour class. With all equipment provided, you will follow the step-by-step instruction to create your own replica of a Bob Ross painting. Enjoy this easy-going atmosphere as you learn how to paint mountains, trees, bushes, hills, rivers, lakes, and sunsets on a 20x 16 canvas.     Combat a declining metabolism and stiff joints! In class you will lift, press, pull, squat, and lunge into a stronger you. We will use weights, bands, balls and our bodies to build muscle, stamina, and balance. And friendships, we build those too. Please note the start for this class has been moved to 9/8 and 12/22 and 12/29 have been removed, hence the price difference from the catalog.
